11 Minute Council Meeting: 'Witchcraft and a Sermon'
The shortest City meeting in recent memory mostly consisted of an invocation by Pagan ministers and a public commentary in rebuttal.
Wednesday night's City Council meeting was short and to the point.
Lasting 11 minutes, from opening roll call to closed council session, the bulk of the meeting consisted of "witchcraft and a sermon."
As previously reported by Santee Patch, the non-sectarian invocation which opens every council meeting was given on Wednesday by Valera and Alan Childers, an ordained Pagan Priest and Priestess.
The invocation itself was short and innocuous- the Devil didn't make an appearance, contrary to the worries of many Santee residents who sent messages to the City chastising the City's choice of invokers.
Alan Childers began the invocation, "I want to thank the spirit for having us here tonight to welcome all these people together as one group, become a community with one heart so we can move forward to do what's best, not only for the self, but for the group."
And, Valera Childers finished, "I call in the sacred feminine, mother of us all, who sustains us, gives us balance and compassion. Lead these fine people to make decisions for this community for the betterment of all. Aho."
The longest portion of the meeting was the one public comment, which acted as rebuttal to the invocation.
"During the invocation prayer, when the baton is passed to any principality other than our creator it means his creation has pushed him away, out of the throne of authority, and replaced it with another. We do not want God, we want variety and political correctness..."
Video portions of the invocation and public comment can be found in the media box at the top of the page.
The next city council meeting is scheduled for November 10, and it is not yet clear who will be giving the invocation.

What is wrong with some Christians? City government is not allowed to pick and choose what religious invocations may be given. at city council. After all there are more than just Christians in Santee so everyone else deserves to be represented as well as the Christians, regardless of what the some Christians seem to think. As a Wiccan Marine Corp Vietnam Veteran I am shocked athis type of biogatry.

This is AMERICA, and as long as it is AMERICA THE LAND OF THE FREE, then all religions we are free to practice should be welcomed to give the invocation.
Now if those dissenters want to move to a religious state, they should try Afghanistan, or Saudi Arabia! How good do they think those religiously run countries are???

Wow, that was interesting. Why do they feel the need to do invocations at all at a City Council meeting?

I agree with Mr. Christopher Blackwell and Ms. Mary Beth. I am a Current United States Marine serving our great country to serve and protect the people AND the rights given to us all. As a man serving this nation and a practicing Pagan who attends the services at The Village Witch, I find it morally disgraceful that a resident of this great nation would speak out against the very rights which allows them to speak freely just because someone of another faith is doing the same at a public hearing. It is a disgrace upon themselves only.

My understanding is the woman was speaking to the City Council NOT to the Village Witch.

and by just watching the video, i come to the conclusion that the young blonde woman was mainly upset that her mainstream religion wasnt the only one saying invocations. just be like the raven and say no more invocations!

WOW how RUDE! I wonder what would happen if a pagan got up after a christian invocation and gave a serum about the evils of Christianity. About how more murders have been committed more wars and more human atrocity has been committed in the name of the C...hristian god than any other religion in the history of man kind. I wonder what would happen, If a pagan preached about the hate bigotry and the us against them thinking it encourages. I know what would happen, it would cause an out right WAR because that's how Christians handle things. ...discussed.

WOW. Never seen anything like this before in my life. I cant believe what our country has come to. It was founded on a belief, Christian belief and doctrines. If you are not a Christian and dont believe, why not worship your way. Why do you have to push your religious views into every political atmosphere open. Would your God want you to cause turmoil, uproars, and disruptions. My God the God of Abraham, Issaic, and Jacob. My Jehovah says he is not the author of confusion......There are so many religions out there they are all MAN MADE...........
Why cant we as a nation come together in unity and love one another and just stand up for what is right. Right for all people not just because it serves a purpose for our religious beliefs.
Love, Unity, Compasion and Understanding is what this country needs.

People are returning to the ancient ways, and someday Christians may be in the minority, and will want religious equality and freedom just as pagan religions do today. So I say, do unto others as you would have them do unto you. All religions are man made. This country WAS NOT founded on christian doctrine. And why not push your faith into the public view? How many thousands of times have non-christians had to sit through Christian invocation to there god? This country was founded on freedom, by people fleeing religious persecution. Many of whom practice the occult in different forms. The problem is freedom of religion means any religion and I am sorry people don't like that but there is no reason to be rude, and certainty not any reason to not allow religious equality.

Hello,
I am the Christian speaker that you have commented on. If I have sounded rude, I apologize, that was not my intentions. Perhaps maybe you did not hear the entire speech? From what I read it has been taken out of context. I want to thank you all for participating ( and esp. the person who stated I was "young" I love you already:) I am a grandmother of 4) with your comments because that is what our founding fathers built this great nation on is the concept of freedom. The speech was directed to the City Council which I had exercised my freedoms to do so. I did not direct the topic to any specific organization if you could listen to the entire speech. If I could, I would like to ask you a question. Who is man ? and what is his purpose?

To Donna, to bad that this country was NOT founded on Christian Beliefs! It was based on the freedom to worship as you chose without fear of reprisal. Oh and by the way, The Old Ways were here long before your Christ. We have had Christianity shoved down our throats for centuries and now you can sit down and shut up and take it!

To all concerned,
I am a member of Sage Moon Grove, (sagemoongrove.org), our High Priest tells us "There is more than one path up the mountain". The Christian bible states that Jesus said "in my Father's house there are many mansions". Do you not see how similiar these two statements are?. To Donna, it is great that you are so strong in YOUR beliefs, faith is important, but NOT ALL CHRISTIANS FEEL AS YOU DO, and where exactly are you following Jesus? Certainly NOT in your acceptance of others. History teaches us that most of (not all) Christianity was built on the backs of Pagans beliefs. And then lets talk about the wars and murders and horrors done in the name of religion. Donna, please do your homework. You will see that our beliefs are one of peace, Earth centered and embrace all, even people like yourself who haven't done their homework regading other religions. Blessed Be.
