378 Driving With Cell Phone Citations Given by Santee Deputies

A year of cell phone citations nets about one a day.

The City of Santee reports that 378 citations for calling or texting on a cell phone without a hands-free or wireless listening device or speaker phone function have been handed out by Santee-based in the last year.

Santee's annual numbers come in below the earlier in the year.

Fines for illegally using a cell phone while driving vary depending on where you are, how fast you're going and other details, but in Santee you can currently expect to pay about $148 for your first offense, and it rises for further tickets. A bill is currently sitting on Governor Brown's desk that, if signed, will about double the fines.

Adults are banned from texting and talking on a cell phone, unless using a hands-free device, and minors may not use one with or without a hands-free device.

The new law would extend the cell phone limitiations to bicycle riders as well.
