By the numbers: Santee Crime Rates

Santee has one of the lowest crime rates in the county, and it continues to go down.

Two new crime reports put Santee in a great light and enforce the family friendly nature of the city.

Santee's latest crime rate numbers came in from the San Diego County Sheriff's Dept. in September and a countywide SANDAG Midyear Crime Report was released in early October (both are available in the media box).

Both reports show significant decreases in most Santee area crime, especially violent crime. So far, in 2010 there have been 17.64 crimes for every 1,000 residents of Santee, the second best rate in the county, and down 16 percent from last year.

According to the SANDAG report, the rate of violent crime in Santee has decreased 26 percent from 2009-2010, and property crimes decreased 12 percent in the same time period.

Santee experienced a 53 percent decrease in robberies, 12 percent decrease in property crimes, 19 percent drop in aggravated assaults and a 25 percent decrease in general thefts (not including vehicular thefts).

The only crime rate hikes were 2 percent increases in thefts from and of vehicles. The area southwest of Route 52 experienced the most of this type of crime, about 18 percent of the city's total.

The 911 response time for "priority two" calls in Santee experienced an 11 percent increase from last year, from an average of 8.9 to 9.9 minutes. Priority two calls are defined as "expeditious response calls involving felony crimes in progress, violent crimes in progress or crimes in which the suspect may be caught." This likely is due to a 23 percent increase in the number of priority two calls.
