Large Amount of Road Work Shouldn't Put Out Residents

The city is going to start repaving major streets in about a month, and its trying to make it easy on residents.

City officials are ready to start in Santee, and they’re even more focused on finishing on time.

Two were held Monday and Tuesday night to explain the process of repaving city streets starting in August, and when each part of the process will take place.

The roadworks project will be broken into chunks, starting with . The city is working to of Fanita Parkway with a 2-inch overlay, improve and add pedestrian ramps at the Lake Canyon Road intersection.

In fact, the city’s contract has a clause in which the construction company charged with the project, Hazard Construction, will be fined a significant amount for not finishing on time.

Project managers insisted at the meetings that residents would not be inconvenienced by the construction, or at least very minimally.

After Fanita, construction crews will work on Lake Canyon Drive, in East Glendon Circle, Rumson Drive, Carlton Hills Boulevard and Mission Gorge Road. In total, the city is repaving and repairing 1.3 million square feet of asphalt in Santee.

In addition to road work, intersections along Carlton Hills Boulevard and Mission Gorge Road will have cameras installed to detect vehicles for directional lights, helping the flow of traffic. The city will also be working to expand the sewer drains along Carlton Hills Boulevard.

Throughout all of the work, there will be one lane of traffic available through the two major streets.

Associate Civil Engineer, Steve Miller, assured people at the meeting that they would not be stuck in their homes and in the worse case scenario, residents might not be able to leave their driveways for 45 minutes to an hour while construction workers spray oil on the pavement.

Another big concern for residents was that construction would be completed by the holidays, as not to interfere with the near East Glendon.

The work on East Glendon is set to be completed by Nov. 18, 2011, one week before the day after Thanksgiving, the traditional date when residents put up their Christmas lights and displays.

“That’s specifically why we picked that day,” Santee Principal Civil Engineer Carl Schmitz said.

The entire street repaving and repairing process is set to be completed in about eight months. Engineers say the construction schedule should be officially determined by the end of July and will be posted on the city’s website. Residents and business owners will also be notified at least five days prior to construction in order to find alternative parking if needed.
