Moms Talk Q&A: The Moms Council

We introduced this column last week, but didn't introduce the Moms Council. So, here they are.

We introduced Moms Talk Q&A last week, but didn't introduce the Moms Council.

In case you missed , Moms Talk is a place to drop in to talk about the latest parenting hot topic or basic questions about your kids. Do you know of local moms raising their children in the Tiger Mother's way and is it the best way? Where can we get information on local flu shot clinics for children? How do we talk to our children about the Tucson shootings? How can we help our children's schools weather their budget cutbacks?

The Santee Patch Moms Council is currently made up of three moms that make up a good representative cross-section of Santee moms, with different aged children and experience: Jodi, Kathy and SanteeMom (she has chosen to use her Patch username).

My name is Jodi Delgado. My husband and I have four children, ages 7, 5, 2, and 6 months. We have lived in Santee for a little over five years, having relocated here from Washington, D.C. My husband and I both work outside the home in the law enforcement field. Our older children attend elementary school in Lakeside, and participate in extracurricular activities in Santee.

We strongly believe in parenting by example and empowering our children to make good choices based on knowledge of consequences. I look forward to being an active part of the Santee community.

I would also like to see discussion threads surrounding the importance of getting our children outdoors as it impacts health and well-being, as well as the positive effects of discovering the simplicity of .

My family and I have lived in Santee since 1991. I have been married to a wonderful husband and father for 25 years and we have 3 grown children, two sons, 25 and 21, and a daughter, 20.  All three of our children attended and Jr. High, and . Our oldest son graduated from UCSD, youngest son will be graduating from SDSU this May, and our daughter is a Junior at SDSU and will be transferring to PLNU in the fall, to attend the nursing program.

I have worked in the medical field for over 27 years and retired 3 years ago. My experience in the medical field was primarily in physical medicine and rehabilitation in brain and spinal cord injuries. I was also involved in outreach educational programs for injury prevention for adolescent and teens, especially high risk.

I have volunteered for the , for and Christmas for the needy. My hobbies are , photography and travel. I have truly and moved here over 20 years ago because of the family community, excellent schools, low crime, family owned businesses, and less traffic, although that has changed significantly in the past five years. I enjoy volunteering to help educate our youths about the importance of education, family support, becoming a productive adult, financial responsibility, career, awareness of bullying, gangs, , street racing, driving safety, sexuality, teenage pregnancy, inappropriate behavior by an adult, abuse and depression.

Our youths are the future and in today’s world where it is necessary for both parents to work, our youths are not always receiving the support and supervision that is needed.

I grew up in Lakeside and have lived in Santee for the past 10 years. I have been married to my husband for 13 years and we have a 9-year-old son. I work a full-time job, but still find time to help out with my son’s sports teams and school activities as he is my number one priority.  I have been the team mom, parent volunteer and a board member for the local little league.

My experience on mom issues comes strictly from my own life experiences. I grew up in a big family so there were always kids around of every age. I have worked with kids both as a pre-school teacher and for the in their after school care program. I also have a Bachelor’s in education from SDSU although I never went into teaching beyond the pre-school level. I am passionate about issues that are affecting our kids today and how they are handled.

I think that the old saying, it takes a village to raise a child, couldn’t be more relevant than it is today. Whether you are in a household where both parents work, or a single mom or dad, parents today need a support system to help them deal with the issues that are facing our kids. I am hoping that is what the Mom’s council will be, a place where moms and dads can come for support and maybe just a different take on something they are dealing with in terms of their kids.
