Friday is 'America Recycles Day' in Santee, City Earned $35,000 for Recycling

Each year the United States generates more than 250 million tons of municipal solid waste, which is more than four pounds per person per day.

Friday, November 15, 2013, has been proclaimed "America Recycles Day" by the City of Santee.

Each year the United States generates more than 250 million tons of municipal solid waste, which is more than four pounds per person per day, according to the Environmental Protection Agency.

The proclamation says it's a day to spread the word about the "excellent recycling programs that have been established, the growth of markets for recyclable material and the importance of buying recycled products."

The City of Santee is paid $5 per ton of recyclables recovered in Santee by the city's trash disposal company, Waste Management. In 2012 the city was paid $35,240 for recyclables.

Now Santee residents can earn coupon rewards for the recycling they're already putting out for curbside pickup. Recyclebank is similar to a frequent flyer program, only members earn points each time they recycle. Members earn Recyclebank Points each time they recycle, which they can use to redeem discounts and deals from hundreds of locally-based businesses and national brands.
