Rugby is one of the fastest growing youth sports in the nation, and especially in San Diego County. And now, East County has a team, the Grossmont Union Irish, part of the Southern California Youth Rugby League. Currently they are fielding a high school JV team with freshman and sophmores from El Capitan, , Monte Vista and Christian high schools. The team is looking for players from 12 - 19 years-old, girls and boys.
The team has plans to evolve next year into a Varsity and JV team with hopes of a 14U and girls team. All of the coaches are trained and certified by USA Rugby.
Practices take place at , and home games are played in Ocean Beach at Dusty Rhodes Park on Saturdays. So far the team is 4-0 with 202 points scored and 27 points given up. They have high hopes of winning the JV championship.
