Lakeside/El Cajon Area Brush Fire Causes Home Evacuations

An fire outside El Cajon blackened about 18 acres and prompted authorities Tuesday to temporarily evacuate homes, issue traffic alerts for area roads and call in medics for two firefighters who may have been injured battling the blaze.

The fire in the 12900 block of Interstate 8 Business was reported shortly before 2:30 p.m., according to the California Highway Patrol. It grew to 18.4 acres before firefighters stopped its spread, according to the Lakeside Fire Protection District.

Sheriff's officials evacuated homes and businesses on Amelia Drive, but the order was later lifted, fire officials said. Additional structures were briefly threatened on Lavala, Flaven and Cindy Lynn lanes, authorities said.

A medical unit was sent to an area off Aurora Drive, for one of two firefighters who were reported down. It's unclear what type of injuries either firefighter may have suffered.

The stretch of Interstate 8 Business between Lavala and Aurora lanes was closed until shortly after 6:30 p.m., according to the San Diego County Department of Public Works.
