Feeling Hot, Hot, Hot: San Diego County Temperatures Are 10-20 Degrees Above Normal

Temperatures closer to the seasonal average are expected for the start of the work week.

San Diego County is in the midst of another day of temperatures that are 10-20 degrees above average, with record-setting highs in some areas this afternoon.

An 88 degree high in Oceanside topped the four-year-old record by eight degrees, NBC7 reported.

According to the National Weather Service reported 92 degree highs at Miramar and in Rancho Penasquitos at 1 p.m., and a 91 degree high at Gillespie Field in El Cajon. Afternoon temperatures in the high 80s were recorded at Brown and Montgomery fields, and in Santee, La Mesa, Escondido, Vista, Poway, Fallbrook, Oceanside and Camp Pendleton.

A NWS spokesman said a list of which of those highs broke records would be available this afternoon.

On Saturday Alpine's high was 83, which topped the previous 80 degree record set on the same day in 2004, according to the NWS. An 87 degree record was set in El Cajon Saturday -- three degrees higher than the previous record high recorded 14 years ago.

However, San Diegans trying to beat the heat at the beaches were advised to be on the lookout for strong rip currents and elevated surf, which forecasters expect along the coast into Monday.

NWS forecasters said a long-period northwest swell would build this afternoon, bringing larger waves to the beaches south of Del Mar.

Dangerous swimming conditions could be possible. Swimmers were advised to obey warning signs and flags, speak with a lifeguard before heading into the water and to stay near lifeguards.

Water temperatures were between 60 and 63, according to web sites.

Officials with the weather service said temperatures 10 to 20 degrees above average west of the mountains were caused by high pressure and offshore winds. Temperatures closer to the seasonal average are expected for the start of the work week.
