It's not a calzone, it's not a pizza- it's a Veggie Wedgie!
Fox's Pizza Den in Santee is celebrating Nutrition Month (March) by promoting their vegetable pizza sandwhich and offering it for $5, about $2 less than it normally goes for.
It makes for a quick, light lunch and is packed tall with mushrooms, bell peppers, onions, cheese, lettuce and tomato with Italian dressing, between two large triangles of pizza dough. It seemed like you get about the amount of veggies on an entire pizza.
I have to admit, my taste buds missed the cheese and pepperoni grease and tomato sauce I expect from a normal pizza, but then the Italian dressing kicked in and made up for it. And I suppose that's one of the purposes of Nutrition Month, to be aware of the overdose of sugar, salt and fat that is a part of the average American diet.
The California Health Network, based in Santee, reached out to East County restaurants to participate in Nutrition Month promotions, and Fox's Pizza Den embraced the concept.
Fox's Pizza Den often holds fundraising days for local schools and organizations, and on March 7 they are giving back 20 percent of all sales to Chet F Harritt School.
