A road rage-sparked race between two drivers led to a head-on collision Friday in front of a Carmel Valley police station and sent two people to a hospital, authorities reported.

Two men, one driving a 2009 BMW and the other in a black sedan, got into a speed contest about 8 a.m. on El Camino Real, near State Route 56, according to San Diego police.

As the two competing motorists approaching Elijah Court at high speed, the driver of the BMW lost control, sending his car crashing head-on into an approaching 2007 Jeep near SDPD Northwestern Division headquarters, Lt. Andra Brown said. The other man then drove off, she said.

The BMW's owner -- who told officers he had gotten into the street race out of anger over being cut off in traffic -- was taken to Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla with a broken thigh bone, according to Brown. The driver of the Jeep was treated for minor injuries.
