Why Go: To buy a hearty meal and help the local Lion's Club in its support of the at . The garden is designed for those with impaired vision to better enjoy the smells and textures of nature.

BEST BETS, A LITTLE FARTHER AFIELD

Where/when: Dallman Confections, El Cajon, 6 p.m., Friday.

Why Go: You know your red wine goes with beef, and your white with fish and chicken, but how do you pair a good vino with chocolate? You'll learn here, in the best way possible, by tasting five wines and their best match, all set up by the pros.

Where/when: San Diego State University, San Diego, 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

Why Go: If pop radio bores you, the New West Electronic Arts and Music Organization might give you a different perspective on what is possible in music. Includes audio installations.

Why Go: To satisfy your political curiosity. Whether you're a fan or a foe, Tea Party darling Sen. Rand Paul, R-KY, has been riding high since his November election. He arrives to promote his first book.

Price: Must purchase book to meet Paul.

Where/when: Mount Laguna, Julian or Pine Valley, Friday through Sunday.

Why Go: San Diego's rain last weekend meant lots of nice powdery snow for much of the back country. The weather might cooperate again this weekend.
