Where/When: The Riviera Supper Club and Turquoise Room. Music starts around 9 p.m. Friday, Feb. 4.

Why Go: All you need is love – and maybe a grilled steak and martini. Get your steak on with a side of tots, then head into the Turquoise Room for some 21 and over drinks and music from the Baja Bugs, a Beatles cover band.

Where/When: Local author Caitlin Rother will sign her new book "Dead Reckoning" at the Grossmont Center Barnes and Noble, 7 p.m., Feb. 3.

Why Go: Rother will chill you to the bone with tales of a former child actor who resorted to murder, and when cornered, wanted to kill again.

3. WHALE WATCHING

Where/When: Flagship-San Diego Harbor Excursions, 9:45 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 5-6.

Why Go: Gray whales! Baby gray whales! Lots of other marine life, too. Excursions are led by a naturalist from the Birch Aquarium, which offers a $5 off coupon.

Pricing: $15-$35. Snacks and drinks for purchase aboard the boat.

4. ROCK CLIMBING

Where/When: The Kroc Center, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 5.

Why Go: Thirty feet of sheer climbing fun! Instruction for beginners is offered.

Pricing: $3 to $5 single visit, $25 to $45 10-visit pass.

Where/When: , 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 3.

Why Go: It’s local and it’s live. Musicians sign up for 15-minute sets; sign-ups begin at 5:45 p.m.

Pricing: Free. But buy coffee and tip the musicians!
