What it Means to Be a Geek

More than just Star Wars and comics..

The world-famous San Diego has begun! They say that they expect this year's convention to accumulate an estimated $698 million in revenue...even more reason to expand the convention center.

Several years ago, sometime before I was even in high school, my friend's parents were kind enough to supply us with free tickets (it was a tad smaller back then). We have been going ever since. Though we enjoy the entertainment aspect, we always make sure to spend money on actual comic books to support the retailers. After all, it is the .

Anyway, all this excitement and anticipation for this year's convention has made me think hard about what a so-called "" or "nerd" really means. Some people consider it an insult, a symbol of social ineptness and incompatibility. Other simply shrug it off as "nothing", that the word doesn't matter in any context. Both of these definitions are incorrect. In truth, being a geek is simply being one among millions of brothers.

Soldiers in the Armed Forces often speak highly of their comrades, referring their unit as a band of brothers or family. The same goes for geeks. Whether you're a Trekkie or a fanboy, an otaku or a gamer, geeks always have each other's back. Our hobbies and interests connect us in ways that "normal people" could never understand. Our world is crazy, but in the good kind of way. There is constant excitement, even about the smallest of things.

In fact, I think that ....they just don't realize it.
