By the Numbers: New Local Unemployment Numbers

With an October unemployment rate of 8.6 percent, Santee looks good compared to the county and state.

New unemployment numbers for October have been released by the Employment Development Department, and Santee is looking pretty good compared to county and state statistics.

Santee has a labor force numbering 32,800, and of those, 2,800 are unemployed. This leaves Santee with an unemployment (UE) rate of 8.6 percent for the month of October.

The San Diego County UE rate in October was 10.2 percent, and the California statewide UE rate was 12 percent.

Historically, Santee's annual UE rate has been less than 1 percent lower than the San Diego County rate. The gap has been growing since 2008 and currently it is 1.6 percent lower than the county rate.

The same is true when compared to the statewide UE rate, which is currently 3.4 percent higher than Santee.

Santee has had an average annual UE rate of 4.31 percent since 2001, which means the city currently has double the number of unemployed than usual for this decade.

The Santee monthly UE rate reached a high of 9.3 percent in March 2010, with a 2010 low of 8.4 percent in May.
