The average price of a gallon of self-serve regular gas continued to inch downward on Thursday, dropping eight-tenths of a cent to $3.865 in San Diego County. It’s the 17th time in 18 days that the price has decreased.
And while the average price is down by 6.2 cents from a week ago, it’s still 5.2 cents more than it was a month—and 87.7 cents higher than at this time last year, according to figures from the AAA and Oil Price Information Service.
“We typically see price decreases in the fall because of lower demand
and because we switch over to the winter gasoline formula, which is less
expensive to make,” said Jeffrey Spring of the Automobile Club of Southern
California. “Usually we see a decline beginning in August, but that didn't happen
this year because of refining issues, overseas selling and the price of crude
The average price fell seven consecutive days, was unchanged Sept. 19,
then dropped each of the next 10 days, including 1 cent on Wednesday.
The average price had risen 19 times in the past 20 days before the
streak of declines began.
