Farmers Market Fresh: Costa Rica Hits Santee

Taco Wednesdays are back in Santee.

Pura Vida, a colorful new vendor got my attention at the Santee Farmers Market the last few weeks. The funky fish shaped signs advertise their signature Costarican fare: tacos, burritos, sandwiches and fresh fruit drinks!

The homemade orange colored cantalope juice I sampled was made from fresh, ripe cantalopes and sweetened with honey. It was so refreshing, delightfully sweet and unusual. The following week I tried bright red passionfruit, equally inspired and very different in flavor, the seeds left in the drink added a great texture. Similar to the Mexican version, Aguas Frescas, these juices are even better than any I've tried.

The veggie taco with portabello mushrooms was highly recommended by the neighboring vendor, so I ordered one and had a sample of the beer-battered fish taco.

The veggie taco was oustanding, with homemade salsas and white sauces, a heaping pile of grilled vegetables and lots of shredded cheese. The fish was juicy and with a light, crisp batter and a bit of a kick. Each element was fresh from scratch and delicious. You can taste the love and tradition behind the food, the attention to detail and flavor take these tacos to the next level.

Can't wait to see what juice flavor they will feature this week!
