For the third year in a row, the County-operated Edgemoor Skilled Nursing Facility in Santee is rated among the best nursing homes in the nation in an annual survey by U.S. News & World Report.

Edgemoor, which was also recognized in the 2012 and 2013 surveys, provides 24-hour nursing care, physical rehabilitation, and skilled nursing services to help up to 192 residents with daily living activities. It also provides medical care and social and psychological services.Patients at the facility may have a multitude of ailments, including Huntington's disease and AIDS, or may have experienced traumatic brain injury.

“It’s great to earn national recognition for something we’ve known for a long time – Edgemoor is one of the finest skilled nursing facilities around,” said County Board of Supervisors Chairwoman Dianne Jacob. “The high rating is testament to the hard work and compassion shown each day by doctors, nurses, administrators, volunteers and others at the Santee facility.”

For its annual survey U.S. News & World Report uses data from the federal Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, which assigns up to five stars to each nursing home. The overall rating is based on the number of stars in three categories: health inspections, nurse staffing, and quality of care. Edgemoor received five stars from the federal agency.

“County-operated facilities like Edgemoor are rare in California,” said Nick Macchione, director of the County Health and Human Services Agency. “Being recognized in this survey is a great validation of the commitment of the staff to making a real difference in the lives of their patients.”
