Charity???

  • So I keep getting bombarded with requests for donations. I imagine many people do. The more we give the more they ask. And that is ok as long as we have it and the money is purposefully used.           After watching an Anderson Cooper news segment regarding a "chain" of cancer charities, including The Breast Cancer Society(we gave to, recently) that showed they give less than 2% of the money they receive, I decided to look up some recent solicitors, and receivers, for myself. So here are my 4 results: American Red Cross IRS form 990 for 09,the last I found, showed 3.587 BILLION in Revenue, 1.717 BILLION in SALARIES, 1.385 BILLION in other expenses AND only 251 Million in Grants. 48% in Salaries, 7% in Grants. Next was March of Dimes. for 2011: 207 Million Revenue, 96 million (46.3%) SALARIES, 79.7 million expenses and 29.3 Million in Grants(14%). Next was American Cancer Society 2011, with 374 Million Revenue,92 Million SALARIES, 160 Mil.expenses and 113 Million GRANTS(30%) and last The Make a Wish Foundation,2011 990 form, with 65 Mil Revenue, 38 mil in GRANTS, 10.8 mil in SALARIES, AND 14 MIL in expenses. Sad numbers make you wonder. Best places I have found for getting efficient use of givings, are Schools, from K-12 to Colleges. In the meantime I keep looking in to any charity that files IRS form 990,since numbers don't lie. And a final note about the expenses portion of the ledger. They include rents, insurances, conference attendance,TRAVEL for executives, per diems, "training" and other miscellaneous expenditures.
