Ten consecutive daily declines have dropped the average price 6 cents below what it was one week ago and 4.1 cents lower than a month ago, according to figures from the AAA and Oil Price Information Service. However, the average price is 57.7 cents higher than a year ago.

“There’s widespread expectation that the big drop in oil prices will lead to reduced gas prices,” said Jeffrey Spring of the Automobile Club of Southern California. “The question is how long oil will continue to trade at significantly below $100 a barrel. That will determine whether gas prices decreases are brief or whether they will provide long and significant relief to drivers who have been paying more for gas this summer than at any other time since 2008.”
