County Fights Mosquitoes and West Nile Virus in Santee's Ponds

A county contractor was out Wednesday making Santee more bug-free.

Santee's ponds and still water areas along the , otherwise known as romantic spots for mosquitoes, got a good dose of larvae-killing pesticide mid last week in a countywide attempt to curb the mosquito population and the risk of spreading the West Nile Virus.

A contractor for the county zoomed around in a helicopter dropping pellets of corn meal infused with two types of bacteria that interrupt the mosquito larvae life cycle. The pellets aren't harmful to the environment, humans or animals, just the baby bugs, according to the City of Santee website. There are 43 spots around the county and four in Santee where the drops happen.

The next round of larvicide is being dispersed in Mast Park West on June 7.
