Daily Dose: Culling the East County Pig Population

The woods of East County San Diego are chock full of wild pigs that are becoming a nuisance- who knew?!

• The federal government is investigating a growing population of feral, predatory pigs in the woods of eastern San Diego County, according to a report in the Los Angeles Times over the weekend.

The pigs, which have been reproducing like wild, and have no natural local predators, now number several hundred. No one is sure how the pigs came to invade the county, but the federal government is discussing plans to cull the pig population with tactics including shooting them from helicopters and using dogs and traps.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals opposes killing the pigs because of potential cruelty in the culling.

• The National Weather Service predicts a 30 percent chance of scattered showers before 11 a.m., fat chance of that though! Look outside- blue skies and a few wisps of cloud. Much like this weekend, the rest of the week should be nice and sunny with highs near 73 and lows around 53.
