Farmers Market Fresh: National Watermelon Day

Find some watermelon at the Santee Farmers Market, on this perfect day for the cooling fruit.

Not too many people at the , open Wednesday's from 3-7 p.m., knew that August 3 is National Watermelon Day, but boy did I let them know.

It was a perfect afternoon to enjoy some watermelon at the market- good and hot.

The raw fruit was available, half for $2.25 or a whole for $4.50, at two different stands.

A new vendor, Viva Birria, had fresh cut fruit, your choice of jicama, watermelon or mango. I got the watermelon/mango combo covered in chili powder, lime and some wonderful salty/fruity Mexican candy topping that I'll have to catch the name of next time.

Also, I picked up six figs (going 3 for $1) that turned out to not be so great. They were gotten from a new vendor, a woman and her children, who feature eggs, dried red pepper, garlic, basil and more, all grown at her home. The eggs are teriffic though!

Bottom line- get down to the market while you still can and enjoy watermelon day like it's meant to be enjoyed!
