MADD Fundraiser Honors Santee Deputy Killed Chasing Drunk Driver

This year's Walk Like MADD is in honor of Deputy Ken Collier, killed in a collision while trying to stop a drunk driver going the wrong way on Highway 52 in Santee.

This year's Walk Like MADD benefit is being held in honor of Deputy Ken Collier, who was killed in the line of duty while working out of the Santee Sheriff's Station.

The walk, which will be held at Liberty Station at 8:15 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 12, is an annual event meant to raise funds and awareness for MADD's (Mothers Against Drunk Driving) programs and services to fight drunk driving.

Collier made the ultimate sacrifice on February 28, 2010 when he was killed in a collision while trying to stop a drunk driver going the wrong way on Highway 52 in Santee.

So far this year in Sheriff's contract areas alone, deputies have arrested more than 1,400 people for DUI, there have been 299 car collisions where alcohol was determined to be a primary factor, and one resulted in death and 119 others were injured, according to the Sheriff's Department.
