Santee's New Fleet of Street Sweepers are Cleanest in the County

"The greener street sweepers are part of a citywide effort to embrace sustainable practices that simultaneously help the environment and reduce costs for electricity, water and other resources."

The cleanest, most environmentally friendly street sweepers in San Diego County will be sprucing up Santee's 135 miles of public streets starting in October.

The City of Santee released details of the new fleet of street cleaning vehicles on their Santee Review blog this week. The new sweepers will run on propane or compressed natural gas, resulting in "80 percent fewer ozone-forming emissions than gasoline vehicles." They also use reclaimed water rather than potable water.

"The greener street sweepers are part of a citywide effort to embrace sustainable practices that simultaneously help the environment and reduce costs for electricity, water and other resources," the city wrote in the blog post.

The city took the lowest bid for the contract with CleanStreet, who offered the environmentally friendly vehicles at the same cost to the city as the old gasoline powered ones. That contract lasts until June 2015.
