Local volunteer and student honored at a Grossmont Healthcare District luncheon.

Santee resident and West Hills senior Chase Whittaker was honored as a 2013 Healthcare Hero for his many volunteer efforts, including more than 1,300 hours in the Junior Volunteer program at Grossmont Hospital.

He was the only Santeean of East County six volunteers nominated by their peers and selected by the Grossmont Healthcare District board in the annual awards program. They were honored at a luncheon at Sycuan Resort on Wednesday.

Whittaker is planning to pursue a career as a doctor specializing in infectious diseases.

Other volunteer efforts he's participated in around Santee include Cajon Park Elementary, Guardian Angels Catholic Church, AYSO soccer, and he even collected donations for the United Children's Fund during the Starlight Circle Christmas light display.
