Guardian Angels Catholic Church Celebrates 50th Anniversary
In 1959, parishioners met in an old laundromat and later in a home before church was built.
Parishioners at in Santee celebrated the church’s 50th anniversary at a Mass and dinner Saturday evening.
The Most Rev. Robert Brom, bishop of San Diego, addressed the congregation at the Mass and reception that followed. Five priests including pastor Kevin P. Casey, S.J., and retired pastor Michael Cunnane concelebrated the Mass.
Founding parishioners were recognized at the reception in the Cunnane Parish Hall. The church was established in 1962 by Bishop Charles F. Buddy.

In 1959, Santee residents conducted services at a laundromat on Mission Gorge Road and later moved to a house on East Heaney Circle that accommodated about 250 people. Religious education classes were held in the garage there.
Four hundred families were registered at the church in 1960. The church now boasts 1,575 families.
