Madelyn Leilani McGuire, of Rio Seco School, 11, Dies

Maddie, as she was known, suffered an epileptic seizure and died June 20. She was going into seventh grade next year.

Madelyn Leilani McGuire, a child of many nicknames who was known not just for her grades, but her caring way with other youngsters, died Thursday following an epileptic seizure. She was 11, according to Glen Abbey Mortuary.

Madelyn, who had just finished sixth grade at Rio Seco School in Santee, enjoyed dance and performing, according to a biography prepared by her family. She was involved in several activities, including Touch of Class Dance, Santee Girl Scouts, the Miss Santee pageant, Santee Ravens Cheer, soccer and Pathways Church.

The youngster, also known as Maddie, attended Chet F. Harritt Elementary School in Santee, where she was remembered on the campus' Facebook page by friends, teachers and room parents.

One recalled her “bright smile and adorable pigtails” when she was in kindergarten, while another was pleased Madelyn had returned recently to visit Harritt.

In the biography, her family said Madelyn had several more colorful nicknames, from “pineapple princess,” a fond nod to her Hawaiian heritage from her grandfather, to MooMoo and squeekie.

Madelyn is part of the family that owns Santee's McWire Electric, started in 1999.

She is survived by her parents and two younger brothers, among other family members. Services were held Monday.
