Longtime Santee resident Nelson S. Gerhart passed away August 18 at age 91 at his son's home in Oak Hill, Virginia, according to an obituary in the Union Tribune.
In life he was a Boy Scout leader, Padre's fan, supporter of girls basketball and a host for foreign exchange students.
Nelson served in the Marine Corps from 1940-45, serving all around the Pacific theater, and was awarded the Silver Star for gallantry for participating in the invasion of Iwo Jima.
After discharge he helped form some of California's most loved state parks as a California state park ranger, and in 1959 he came to Santee to work at the North Island Naval Rework Facility.
He will be interred at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery on September 27.
