How's the New Commute?

With the SR-52 expansion now open to traffic, how has it changed your drive?

left this comment on Tuesday morning:

"Heard the commute is worse then ever. Now you have three 2 lane feeder systems(Mission Gorge, the 125 and the 67) all merging in the same place, onto a two lane freeway (the 52). I can only imagine that the commute back into Santee from the 52 will be just as bad, with everyone trying to get off at the about the same location to get onto Mission Gorge, the 125 or the 67. Sounds (and looks) like poor planning to me. I thought this was supposed to alleviate traffic problems not create them. Only place it might have freed up traffic congestion a bit is on the 8."

That's the first report posted on this site about the traffic and commuting affects of the - not exactly encouraging. Santee Patch will be analyzing the traffic affects over the next week, but we want your input, you know better than anyone!

Consider this an open forum for your thoughts on the expansion, from to complaints and suggestions for new routes and peaks of traffic.

If you haven't driven the new stretch, .

Here are a few more that were posted around the site this morning:

Andrew Meil:

I take Mast Blvd to get home in Santee (Cause' I HATE TAKING MISSION GORGE ROAD - TOO MANY Street lights!) - This will be much better. I would stay on California State Route 52 from Kearny Mesa, where I work, all the way to Magnolia Avenue, make a left towards suburb Santee and BOOM! I'm HOME! Yay! - I do say though, CALTRANS COULD have made the freeway at least a minimum of 3 lanes each direction...I can understand the bottleneck from CA 125 to CA 67 - Two Lanes = One American Vechicle....normaly (Just kidding) :-P - I do see a major backup happening at the Magnolia Avenue exit though...and a major backup at the Large, flyover ramps to North/South CA 67...a lot of vehicles use CA 52....however, a new freeway is better than NO freeway - Here here CALTRANS! A project that is legit! Now, make our freeway pretty - PLANT NICE PLANTS AROUND IT!

Excited for the expansion as it will be easier to get onto the 67 but I am not looking forward to all that extra congestion. YUCK! Can't wait to move out of state where "bad" traffic is 4 cars in front of your vehicle.

With so few lanes...they never learn...... just like when 52 opened, we will be widening the free way in no time at a higher cost in the future...so dumb.

Drive home on the 52 was a mess...backed up onto the 163 ramp and snail's pace from there. Left work 20 minutes earlier than usual and got home at the same time I always do. I hope the people driving Santee surface streets got some relief, because my quality of life will be worse if this continues.

I'm sitting here in my office facing the 52. I'm watching hundreds and hundreds of cars and trucks using the new freeway. I'm looking at all those cars and trucks that would be on Mission Gorge or Mast just last week. On my way to work this morning, I could not use the 52 East from the 125 North unless I wanted to wait in that long line of cars attempting to get on the 52 West. Maybe someday they will add another lane for the 52 on ramp. But for right now, traffic has got to be a major improvement on Mission Gorge and Mast.

I live in Lakeside and commute to kearny Mesa the new freeway is great until you hit backed upA.M traffic at 125 you essentialy have 5 lanes of traffic going into two lanes for about a mile .. (until Mast ) What where they thinking ? the ride home going east is a little better . A third lane would be so much better..

Timing of traffic lights still needs major work. I wrote a while back before the freeway opened about the bad timing of traffic lights. The response from the city was "THEY ARE TIMED". On my way home tonight I was east bound on Prospect so I could jump on the 52 at Cuyamaca. In the left hand turn lane on Prospect there were about 30 cars waiting to make the turn. The left turn turns green: 3 cars make the turn on green, 1 car makes it on yellow and 1 car makes it on red. That is 5 cars per cycle, but only if the 5th car is willing to make the turn on red. Waiting for my turn to make the turn, I noticed the new traffic lights at the on and off ramps would turn green with no cars waiting and then turn red with a lot of cars waiting to let the off ramp from 52 east cross the tracks. School is still in session, can't they get some high school kid to program the timing of the lights so traffic can flow.

This traffic light situation has been going on for years all over the Metro area, I wonder if it is set up this way just to gleen more $ for the coffers , have noticed just yesterday once again 2 cars and you cant even get through on a yellow, before it turns red , gotch ya.
