Poll: Is College Education Still Worth the Money? ‘60 Minutes’ Guest Says No

Peter Thiel is paying young entrepreneurs $100,000 to drop out of their universities to seek success.

The same day that San Diego State University held the last of several commencement events, 60 Minutes featured a segment that unceremoniously threw water on the value of a college education.  In Sunday's report, Morley Safer talked to Peter Thiel, the PayPal billionaire who is paying youngsters $100,000 to drop out of college and pursue their own business dreams. But without the seed money, what are the typical student's chances of success without higher education? What is the tipping point when years of debt keep college from penciling out?

A college education is not for everyone, and the amount of money spent does not guarentee sucesses. The secret is motivation, if you are movitated to suceed you will find a way to do so, if not no amount of money will guarentee that you will. For so many of our young people college is just a way point on a journey to (Who knows if they don't). There is a whole group for whom vocational trainning is a much better option as we are coming to learn after the schools dropped it in favor of the every kid to college, which just wastes a lot of them when they drop out and stop the educational effort. At least this is how it seems to me !

This is the rule of thumb I'd use: if you can become proficient in your career through on-the-job training without endangering anyone's life, college is not necessary.

That statement would have merit except that most universities screw open student's heads and pour in inert filler.

i didn't mean to use the term 'education' as only a college degree....i'm talking about trade skills too...i learned to sew when i was a kid...it's not my 'formal training', but i can go anywhere in the world and make money with the skill....
