San Diego Foundation to Participate in 14th Annual Community Foundation Week

During the week of November 12-18, 2013, The San Diego Foundation, in partnership with the Council on Foundations, will join more than 750 community foundations across America for the 14th Annual Community Foundation Week to tell the stories of lives changed, jobs created, and communities transformed through philanthropy’s partnership with private and public community leaders and organizations.

During the week, The San Diego Foundation will help spread the word and inspire “do-gooders” to do more good in their neighborhoods.

Bob Kelly, President and CEO of The San Diego Foundation, stated “The Foundation works every day to help address the most pressing issues facing our community. Currently we are engaged in the Opening the Outdoors initiative that helps reclaim the region’s natural beauty and create world-class urban parks and gateways to nature. In addition, our Malin Burnham San Diego Center for Civic Engagement is very involved with the Education (3 to 3), which helps to create opportunities for educational successes among pre-K students through identifying readiness gaps and collaborating with the education community to foster improved educational outcomes.

“With limited resources and a growing need for services to help families in need, we are more determined than ever to bring our community partners together to find innovative and effective solutions to some of our most challenging social problems."

Vikki Spurill, President and CEO of Council on Foundations, added, “As we prepare to mark the Community Foundation Centennial next year, this year’s Community Foundation Week provides a wonderful opportunity to begin the discussion of how the legacy of place-based philanthropy has shaped our nation.”

Community foundations, one of the fastest-growing forms of philanthropy, are independent, public entities that steward philanthropic resources from institutional and individual donors to local nonprofits that are the heart of strong, vibrant

communities. The 2012 Columbus Survey found that as the nation continues through a difficult economic recovery, gifts by community foundations increased by 15 percent. During the last fiscal year, The San Diego Foundation introduced 78 new funds, including 28 new endowment funds, received $48 million in contributions to new and existing funds, and granted $47 million to the San Diego Community.

“We hope our donors and stakeholders will embrace the spirit of giving during year-end and find a way that is available to them to maximize their giving in the community,” said Adrienne Vargas. “Our charitable giving team is here as your partner to help develop your philanthropic giving plan. We are accustomed to helping donors, foundations and corporations in their giving strategies.”
