37-Year-Old Man Killed in Shooting in East County IDed

Kevin McCalla was found lying on a sidewalk in an apartment complex at about 8:45 p.m. Wednesday.

Authorities today publicly identified the 37-year-old man killed this week in a shooting at an apartment complex in an unincorporated area near El Cajon.

Kevin McCalla was found lying on a sidewalk in the Pepper Creek apartment complex at 1475 Graves Ave. about 8:45 p.m. Wednesday by deputies dispatched to investigate reports of gunfire and a disturbance, sheriff's Lt. Jeffrey Duckworth said.

Duckworth said investigators believed McCalla was a "temporary resident" of El Cajon.

McCalla suffered gunshot wounds and was unresponsive and without a pulse, Duckworth said. Paramedics attempted to revive the victim, but he died at the scene.

Sheriff's investigators did not immediately identify any persons or vehicles of interest.
