Deputies and officers representing 14 local law enforcement agencies, from the Sheriff's Dept. to the California Highway Patrol took part in this year's crackdown, which topped the 715 arrests made in the same period last year. That's an 8 percent rise in DUI arrests.

Law enforcement officials said they will be conducting more Avoid DUI operations throughout the County and region during Super Bowl Sunday in February and then again for local St Patrick’s Day in March.

As for the efficacy of the crackdown, the press release states: "DUI Checkpoints, along with regularly scheduled high visibility DUI enforcement, are proven strategies with the goal of removing impaired drivers from the road and heightening awareness of the dangers of driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol."
