Bomb-Filled Home Burned on Thursday

The home, described by authorities as a "bomb factory," was discovered to have substances similar to those used by suicide bombers.

A bomb-arson team destroyed a North County home Thursday morning where a man allegedly built bombs.

The home, which belonged to George Djura Jakubec, was discovered when a Fallbrook landscaper was seriously injured when he stepped on and detonated some type of explosive on Nov. 18. Later, officials found makeshift bombs and large amounts of explosive materials, and determined the only way to rid the area of the unsafe substances was to destroy the home.

On Monday, Jakubec pleaded not guilty to eight federal criminal counts and was ordered held without bail. He is charged with with making and possessing destructive devices, as well as robbing three banks and trying to rob a fourth over the past two years. A federal indictment handed up last week alleges that Jakubec made destructive devices, including nine detonators and 13 grenade hulls, along with unknown quantities of high explosives.

The home, which was described as a "bomb factory" by Deputy District Attorney Terri Perez, also had hazardous compounds, including substances favored by suicide bombers, said officials.

Neighbors from the area were asked to enter a nearby shelter during the burning of home, which was authorized after the San Diego County Board of Supervisors ratified a local emergency declaration on Tuesday (see time lapse photos of the house being destroyed in the media box).

The California Department of Toxic Substances Control has agreed to fund removal of all the debris from the site except for the house's concrete slab.
