Brush Fire Put Down Near Gillespie Field

A small brush fire near the El Cajon/Santee border was quickly taken care of by firefighters.

Santee and other Heartland put down a brush fire that started just west of and threatened multiple homes Monday around 1:45 p.m.

A dropped water and multiple engines responded to the fire. Firefighters battled the blaze from homeowners yards bordering the strip of canyon between two residential streets, keeping the fire in check until it could be brought under control.

The fire began at 2685 Windmill View Rd. and within about 20 minutes firefighters had it under control and mostly extinguished.

"Quick action by firefighters, and the fact this hillside recently was
cleared of heavy brush by hired workers and goats, creating a defensible space, kept the fire small, burning just a half-acre,'' Zech said.

The cause of the fire was under investigation.
