Cunningham Family Thanks Community Following March SR-52 Crash

Four members of the Cathedral High basketball coach's family are recovering after a drunk driver hit their vehicle.

The Cunningham family has talked about their ordeal following the March wreck on state Route 52 in which a drunk driver smashed into their van, causing severe injuries to four family members.

Will Cunningham, the boys basketball coach at Cathedral Catholic High School in Carmel Valley, thanked the community in an interview with 10News.com, in which his wife Alisa and three daughters – some of whom are still fighting the lingering effects of their injuries – appeared with him.

One daughter, Taylor, was in the hospital for two-and-a-half months and in a coma for 17 days.

“We are now in the process of trying to heal physically and mentally, the process we're told will take some time. The girls have all began to rehab in an effort to get back to where they were before,” the coach told the station.

The accused drunk driver, Matthew Leonardo, drove the wrong way on SR-52 between Tierrasanta and Santee when he hit the family. Cunningham and his son arrived at the scene and saw the devastated family van, according to the report.
