County News

• A multi-agency narcotics task force seized nearly 200,000 marijuana plants from 150 locations throughout San Diego County over an 11-month period ending last month, officials announced Thursday.

More than 65,000 of the plants were seized from public lands, with the help of the Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Forest Service and tribal partners on reservations, according to Bill Sherman, acting special agent in charge of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration's San Diego Field Division.

• Backers of the arts met Thursday night to see if there is enough support to create a regional Arts Council for San Diego County.

The city of San Diego has an Arts Council, but the county is one of only seven in California that does not, said April Game, who belongs to an organization called Art Pulse. The other such counties are in sparsely populated agricultural areas.

Arts councils provide assistance to artists and organizations with programming, public relations and marketing. Such a council for the county could provide a safety net in case the city's next mayor decides to cut arts funding, Game said.

• The Metropolitan Transit System Board of Directors voted Thursday to limit the amount of bags and cargo that riders can carry onto buses and trolleys.

The action stems from a series of complaints from riders.

• A sergeant with the El Cajon Police Department is the subject of an internal investigation stemming from a sex-assault accusation lodged by a law enforcement volunteer, ECPD Chief Pat Sprecco disclosed Thursday.

The sergeant has been on leave since the allegation arose late last summer, according to Sprecco, who declined to release the name, gender or age of the accused.
