Drivers on Mast Boulevard Find DUI Checkpoint Saturday Night

Deputies look for drunken drivers, suspended licenses and other violations.

Sheriff’s deputies arrested one driver for suspicion of DUI Saturday night at a checkpoint on Mast Boulevard, according to Sgt. Scott Hill. Two people were arrested on other charges and eight vehicles were impounded.

The checkpoint began at 9:00 p.m. at 8750 Mast Blvd. and was over by 3:00 a.m., according to Hill. All but 10 of the vehicles that drove through the checkpoint were contacted by deputies checking driver’s licenses and looking for signs of impairment.

Deputies sent 33 vehicles to a secondary-inspection area, where eight field sobriety tests were given. Eleven citations were issued on a variety of violations, according to Hill.

This detail was part of a nationwide crackdown on impaired driving from Aug. 19 to Sept. 5 known as Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over.

“All too often, innocent, law‐abiding people suffer tragic consequences and the loss of loved ones due to this careless disregard for human life. We will be especially vigilant during these high‐risk times when impaired drivers are most likely to be on our roads,” San Diego County Sheriff Bill Gore said in a statement.
