DUI Arrests Up Statewide Over Holiday Weekend

There were fewer crash fatalities in 2010 than last year but more drunken driving arrests.

Nearly 100 San Diego County drivers were among more than 1,500 statewide arrested on suspicion of drunken driving over the holiday weekend, according to a California Highway Patrol report released Monday.

The , which began Wednesday at 6:01 p.m. and ended Sunday at 11:59 p.m., saw 43 percent fewer crash fatalities statewide but 5 percent more drunken driving arrests. Both fatalities and arrests declined from last year in San Diego County.

There were two fatalities in the county last year but none this year.

A 58-year-old man died in a solo car accident Saturday on Interstate 5 in northern San Diego County, but his death was determined to be due to natural causes and, thus, not included in the CHP tally.

There also were 107 drunken driving arrests in 2009 countywide compared to 94 this year.
