Experimental Plane Makes Emergency Landing at Gillespie Field

No injuries, but an experimental light plane in flames after an impressive emergency landing.

An experimental small plane safely made an emergency landing Thursday morning at after the cockpit filled with smoke.

The pilot noticed a mechanical problem with the aircraft at about 11 a.m. as he and a single passenger were flying over east county San Diego, according to spokeswoman Monica Zech.

He managed to land the light plane, though smoke was filling the cabin, clipping the nose on the runway. The impact caused an engine fire to spark up, according to Zech.

The two occupants were able to get safely clear of the plane and quickly extinguished the flames.
