Fire Rips Through Kelly's Pub Near Gillespie Field

A two-alarm fire ripped through a tavern near Gillespie Field airport Friday, causing extensive damage but resulting in no injuries.

About a half-dozen people were inside Kelly's Pub on East Bradley Avenue in the unincorporated Bostonia area when it began filling with smoke shortly before 10:30 a.m.

They evacuated along with occupants of several other businesses, including a taco shop, housed in the same building, said Leonard Villarreal, spokesman for San Miguel Consolidated Fire Protection District.

It took crews from four agencies about 30 minutes to subdue the intense flames, which burned through the roof of the tavern and sent smoke into adjacent commercial spaces.

Preliminary damage estimates set the monetary losses at between $175,000 and $250,000.

The cause of the blaze, which may have started inside a storeroom in the bar, was under investigation, Villarreal said.
