Gunman Accused of Robbing Two El Cajon Eateries Arrested After Chase

The suspect was spotted by police Saturday leaving an address on South Magnolia Avenue.

A 22-year-old man was behind bars Saturday for allegedly robbing two El Cajon restaurants and attempting to hold up a third, police said.

El Cajon police last week asked for the public's help in identifying a suspect, and tips and witness accounts led them to Christopher Kalani of El Cajon, who was spotted about 4:30 p.m. Saturday leaving an address on South Magnolia Avenue, El Cajon police Lt. Frank La Haye said.

The suspect tried to run away as officers closed in, but was chased briefly in the 600 block of Van Houten Avenue near West Washington Avenue, then arrested for suspicion of armed robbery, La Haye said.

La Haye said Kalani was suspected of robbing a Subway sandwich shop at 220 W. Main St. at gunpoint around 11 p.m. on Monday, and attempting to rob the Rally's Burger restaurant at 1261 E. Main St. in a similar fashion two days later.

He's also suspected in the armed robbery of the Little Caesar's Pizza at 111 W. Washington Ave. about 9:30 p.m. Thursday, La Haye said.
