Hannah Anderson Kidnapper Had Marijuana in His System When He Was Shot

Medical examiner says James DiMaggio had THC in his bloodstream at the time of his Aug. 10 death in a remote area northeast of Boise where he had forcibly taken 16-year-old Hannah Anderson of Lakeside.

James Lee DiMaggio, who kidnapped a teenage family friend and El Capitan High School student last summer, murdered her mother and brother and fled with her to Idaho had marijuana and a prescription drug in his system when he was fatally shot a week later by federal agents, the examiner who did the autopsy disclosed Wednesday.

DiMaggio, 40, had tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, in his bloodstream at the time of his Aug. 10 death in a remote area northeast of Boise where he had forcibly taken 16-year-old Hannah Anderson of Lakeside, according to Nathan Hess, coroner of Valley County, Idaho.

"Whether or not (the chemical) was impeding his judgment, I don't know," he said. "That's something that can be in the system for a while."

Hess declined to disclose the type of legal medication DiMaggio had in his system, though he said it was not a commonly abused or mind-altering substance.

Authorities said DiMaggio abducted the El Capitan High School junior on Aug. 3 and killed her mother and 8-year-old brother, whose remains were found in the suspect's fire-gutted mountain home in southeast San Diego County.

A federal hostage-rescue team tracked down the girl and DiMaggio -- whom she had known since early childhood and referred to as "Uncle Jim" -- in Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness Area on Aug. 10.

When he fired a gun while standing near the teen, the agents opened fire, killing him on the spot. The girl only learned about the violent deaths of her family members following her rescue, according to San Diego County Sheriff Bill Gore.

The motive for the crimes was unclear, though family friends told reporters DiMaggio seemed to have developed an infatuation with the teenager, a change in their relationship that made her uncomfortable.

NON-NEWS Anti-Pot propaganda. So what was the 'PRESCRIPTION' drug in his system???
Mary Secord November 01, 2013 at 08:57 AM
Really highly doubt it was the marijuana that made him do these things, he was crazy!
Michael Kennedy November 01, 2013 at 09:03 AM
Lousy reporting. What was the prescription drug that obviously altered his perception, what about the alcohol? Lousy reporting you mean they didn't test for alcohol?
frank robertson November 01, 2013 at 09:07 AM
Here it is again the anti freedom anti drug nuts have another hollow claim to make against pot. The freak was nuts long before he smoked a joint
Kathleen D. King November 01, 2013 at 09:13 AM
This has got to be one of the dumbest articles I've ever read. THC? Really? Yeah, that might make him eat a lot and then fall asleep, but murder, kidnap and burn down his house? Uhhh... NO! Not buying it, I wasn't born in 1800 and I sure as hell know better. How about you do more research and give us a REAL story about it? Or better yet.. skip it, you obviously have no idea of the effects of THC.
Melodae Farley November 01, 2013 at 09:26 AM
The prescription drug -- whatever it was --would have been more likely to impede his judgment -- more likely he was deranged and the THC calmed him down. This reads like a Dragnet 1967 script, and I love Joe and Bill, but their information was just wrong -- politically correct for the time, but wrong.
Dave Givens November 01, 2013 at 09:33 AM
It says he "had marijuana and a prescription drug in his system." I'm much more interested in that PERSCRIPTION DRUG! You see, it appears almost every psycotic killer in last several years has been on the darn anti-depression medicine the pharma-corps has been pumping into our society. Just makes me a little curious, because we all know pot doesn't make people act this way...EVER. In fact, that would be the complete opposite.

The reason for doing what he did is over and done with. Let the story die, it is over and done with.

Several of you got it right. My firm created the first honest substance abuse curricula in 1970 - even Bill Buckley was enthusiastic - and became a lifelong advocate for decriminalization once he learned the facts. It was used in every state BUT - it also included alcohol, tobacco, and prescription drugs. Nixon, who had created the term "War on Drugs" when he shut the Mexican border and created the DEA with his convicted Att. Gen. John Mitchell to put drugs uswer political control eg: lawyers and enforcers rather than HHS. All funding for privately created drug ed was halted at the request of the alcohol, tobacco, and prescription drug industries - and the police flooded the classrooms with DARE which initially said zip about anyhting except "catch the criminal" - it was later reformed, but there were already teachers, there were already curricula and you let them send the armed constabulary into schools as heroes ...and you wonder about gun and drug violence? Oxycontin is made by a private firm, and the Sackler family makes a little bit on every pill.

Can't believe they're still calling this a kidnapping.

Wonder if it was in Hannah's system too?
Patti Gmitra November 01, 2013 at 11:20 AM
I believe this "innocent" teenage girl led her "uncle" on with the way she dressed, her flirting, phone calls, texts, etc. and when he wanted to take her up on what she was offering, she found out the game she played with him wasn't just fun. Mom found out, confronted him and he snapped. I believe she didn't have anything to do with the murders but she sure as hell is guilty of getting this guy all stirred up. Of course she's posted pictures of herself all smiles, look at all the attention she's getting!! She didn't learn a thing.
Lewis Regner-Redux November 01, 2013 at 11:54 AM
In other words, a story about NOTHING!
Nicole Obrien November 01, 2013 at 12:15 PM
@ Patti Gmitra ..... we are not really turning a tragedy into a game of CAT N MOUSE ..right ! Honestly ....very simple minded and ignorant ... there has been loss of life ....what are you thinking ???
Nolan Hughes November 01, 2013 at 12:33 PM
Seriously? The media is seriously gonna blame this on weed? This story has so many holes that the only person that knows the actual truth is the one who is not talking
Nolan Hughes November 01, 2013 at 12:36 PM
My theory of this is that the two were probably hooking up and having sex at the Anderson's house. The mom walks in and sees it. She threatens to report it and he beats her to death. Then if the father was home at that time he walks up there and DiMaggio then kills the dad. The girl runs away with DiMaggio and they are both needed counseling for something. When those ppl in the woods saw the two they never mentioned that she looked terrified.
sue November 01, 2013 at 01:00 PM
the dad is alive and walking about there goes your fairy tale

Cannabis stays in the system for 30 days after smoking it. Violence is not a side effect of cannabis, which is now used as a cure for cancer. Author of this article needs to Google up and watch Sanjay Gupta's recent supporting documentary. We cannot say about side of effects of other substance since it is unknown.
Michael Bonds November 01, 2013 at 01:42 PM
Really trying to blame this on weed, what BS it does not lead to this kind of actions. The script on the other hand who knows what it was, probably an antipsychotic which is why they don't want to say what it was, just trying to condemn weed again as usual. Oh and Nolan he didn't kill the dad, just the mom and little brother
Billie Rose-Kernes November 01, 2013 at 03:21 PM
If I were to guess what script was in his system that they didn't want to mention I would say it was "a little blue pill" But that's just my opinion..........

pot does NOT cure cancer . It supposedly lessens pain and chemo side effects but it does not cure.
Connie Smith November 01, 2013 at 07:47 PM
Well...the results are in. Scientist Sue, going against the results of other scientific studies, has made a determination that pot does not cause cancer. Tell us, Sue....when does your study come out in the New England Journal of Medicine? http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/09/19/marijuana-and-cancer_n_1898208.html

The FBI and Sheriff Gore want this case to disappear from public consciousness. But at the same time, they want to clean up their image of gross incompetence, conclusion-jumping and summary execution. You can't have both, fellas...
