Lakeside Man Taken into Custody After 6-Hour Standoff

Multiple news agencies reported that William Durant, 36, of Lakeside, was arrested and the standoff had ended.

A man who held off law enforcement agents from the roof of an annex building near the San Diego FBI field office in Sorrento Valley Sunday was taken into custody after almost six hours.

Multiple news agencies reported that William Durant, 36, of Lakeside, was arrested and the standoff had ended.

The suspect showed up shortly after 11:30 a.m. at the federal agency's offices at 10385 Vista Sorrento Parkway, climbed over the south side security gate and attempted to gain access to the building through the front entrance, according to FBI Special Agent Darrell Foxworth.

Foxworth said the suspect may have injured himself climbing over the fence.

When unable to enter the building, he walked to a parking garage on the complex's north side and climbed to the top of an annex building, Foxworth said. The special agent added that although the annex building is a single- story, it could be as high as three stories because of slope of an adjacent hillside.

The suspect's motive was not known, Foxworth said.

FBI negotiators attempted to make contact at mid-afternoon as FBI agents and a SWAT team, San Diego police and fire personnel waited on scene, Foxworth said.

During the standoff, the suspect contacted or was contacted by local news agencies, it was reported.

He told NBC7 that he went to the building to speak with an agent and that he feared for his life, the television station reported.

He also called CBS8 asking to talk to an agent, and told a producer there that he wanted to jump, according to a CBS8 reporter.
