Man Arrested for Firing Gun on New Year’s Eve

As the clock approached midnight, fireworks and gunfire could be heard throughout the county.

A Santee man was arrested on suspicion of unlawfully firing a gun on New Year’s Eve, and authorities got reports of celebratory gunfire or fireworks in Vista, San Marcos, Escondido, Lemon Grove, Imperial Beach and Chula Vista.

The suspect arrested in Santee, at some apartments on East Bradley Avenue about 7:30 p.m., was jailed, but sheriff’s deputies did not make public his name.

About 10 shots reportedly were fired. Unlawfully discharging a gun, which can be filed as a felony, is punishable by a jail term.

About 10 p.m., other reports of gunfire started coming in, but authorities reported no injuries associated with the gunfire. In South Los Angeles, a bullet fired into the air came through the roof of a home and wounded a man in a leg.

Someone east of El Cajon set off a bottle rocket that started a brush fire about 10:10 p.m. along Mountain View Road. By the time firefighters arrived, the fire was out, according to published reports.
