Multiple Brush Fires Along I-8 Cause Traffic Near Alpine

A series of four brush fires broke out Tuesday afternoon right alongside the I-8 freeway and were contained in about an hour.

About 10 acres burned in four separate brush fires along Interstate 8 near Alpine on Tuesday afternoon.

The fires sprang up around 2:30 p.m. for unknown reasons on the south side of I-8 between Dunbar Lane and Alpine Boulevard, according to Cal Fire.

Crews battling the fires included about 75 firefighters, two airtankers, two helicopters dropping water and a bulldozer, Cal Fire said.

The spread of the fires stopped around 3:30 p.m., according to Cal Fire spokeswoman Roxanne Provaznik.

According to a CHP SigAlert, a few cars stopped before firefighters arrived, with occupants attempting to put out the blazes, and traffic was backed up for about five miles as the fires were battled.
