Update: Rollover Crash on SR-52 Leaves Two Santee Teens Dead

Three other teens are hospitalized following an accident that apparently involved high speed racing and a driver possibly under the influence of marijuana.

Updated April 6 @ 7:40 a.m.

Two teenagers were killed, three were hospitalized and one was jailed following a rollover crash during a street race between two cars on state Route 52, authorities said Thursday.

Five Santee teenagers were in a Volkswagen Passat and three people were in a Volvo S40, whose 18-year-old driver was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of marijuana, that were traveling eastbound state Route 52 near Convoy Street, headed home from a beach party at La Jolla Shores about 11:45 p.m. Wednesday, according to California Highway Patrol Officer Art Athans.

Witnesses told the CHP that the two vehicles were racing at speeds of between 100 and 110 mph when they crashed, Athans said.

The Volkswagen's driver lost control of the car which then careened into the center divider and a bridge pillar at the Convoy Street overcrossing and flipped end over end, Athans said.

The San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office identified the dead teenagers as Santee resident Anthony Foreman, 18, and student Jaylie James Campbell, 16. They were each rear-seat passengers in the Passat and both were ejected from the vehicle, the Medical Examiner's Office reported.

Investigators haven't determined whether they were wearing seatbelts due to the extensive damage, Athans said.

The driver of the Volkswagen, a 16-year-old boy, sustained moderate to major injuries in the crash, while the other back-seat passenger, 17-year-old boy, sustained major internal injuries, according to the CHP. The front-seat passenger, a 15-year-old girl sustained major head trauma and is reported in grave condition and on life support, Athans said.

The three teens were taken by ambulances to Sharp Memorial Hospital.

The Volkswagen's driver was evaluated but determined not to be under the influence of alcohol or drugs at the time of the crash, according to the CHP. The 16-year-old is reported to have had his license for less than five months- in violation of his provisional license, Athans said. Teens licensed for less than one year are not allowed to carry more than one passenger less than 20 years old and must have an adult in the car if

The Volvo's driver, 18-year-old Michael S. Johnson of Lakeside, was arrested and booked into San Diego County Jail for suspicion of vehicular manslaughter, driving under the influence of marijuana and racing in a speed contest causing injury, Athans said.

A small amount of marijuana was found in the Volvo, according to Athans.

Johnson was released from jail this afternoon after posting bail, which was set at $50,000, U-T San Diego reported.

The Volvo did not crash and no one in it was injured.

It's so sad that young kids now a day don't realize that getting behind the wheel of car and racing like that can cause fatalities. My heart goes goes out to all families involved. May God be with you and your families.
Motivated Santee Citizen April 05, 2012 at 09:48 PM
Thank God they did not hit any other vehicles and put an innocent family through what they are going through.
buzidebbee April 05, 2012 at 10:02 PM
Kids, you CAN die - you will die. Don't think for a second it can't happen to you PLEASE. If you won't think of yourselves think of what this does to your families. Racing is not THAT fun. PLEASE stop.

tradegy! but as usual the idiot libs get it wrong. it's not the car that's dangerous. it's the humans behaving irresponsibly. texting, cell phones, make up, drugs, drinking etc etc..... sorry this happened, it seems like most high school kids know somebody that died way too early in car crash.
Doug Curlee April 06, 2012 at 12:29 AM
qwhat do the "libs" have to do with anything about this story?..and who the hell said anything about the cars being at fault?..we know it was the kids!.. why don't you go away and come back when you (a) grow up, and (b) have the guts to post under your real name? (i don't have any hope EITHER of those things will happne anytime soon..) doug

Bearburst April 06, 2012 at 06:10 AM
I understand that the other kid who was racing should get some charges for sure...but he didn't crash. I don't think ruining a young kids life with a vehicular manslaughter charge is the right thing to do. It was the fault of the driver that crashed, not the one that didn't, plain and simple. And charging him with that isn't going to bring back the dead, it's just going to destroy another young life.
adam paul April 06, 2012 at 12:47 PM
Are u serious about your statement? Of course he deserves to be charged with vehicular manslaughter. Doesn't matter if they crashed or not but the fact that their actions caused injury. This thing about not ruining another young life and not charging him due to the fact that it won't bring back the dead is rediculous. I guess by your statement if a young person is busted for drinking and driving they shouldn't be given a DUI because that woul ruin their life. Comeon the person deserves harsh consequences and the charges he faces are in the right.
Baseballmom April 06, 2012 at 07:16 PM
I think what Bear is saying that yes it's a terrible thing that happened.Charging an 18 year old with manslaughter over street racing when both parties are at fault is strong. Take his license, yes punish him for possibly being under the influeance at the time. Maybe reckless indangerment or more but not manslaughter. My son and neice know Jaylie. So this puts it in that difficult spot but the young man is suffering both of the drivers are. It's a hard spot and everyone has their opinions.

The 17-year old male is out of the hospital but apparently, the 15-year old isn't. Would be nice to get an update on the matter ...

Update: http://santee.patch.com/articles/15-year-old-santana-student-injured-in-crash-awakens-from-coma I think UT is reporting that the 17-year-old is still in hospital.
Bella April 23, 2012 at 06:29 PM
do you know if his gas peddle stuck "motivated Santee citizen?" NO.. you don't, but here you are again, all set to prosecute. Have you ever drove fast? Nah... You must be a Saint.
Bella April 23, 2012 at 06:34 PM
are you okay?? 3,000 pounds of metal is dangerous, as is all the other stuff American's do while they drive. When was the last time you ate a burger and drove?
Bella April 23, 2012 at 06:35 PM
agreed, Bearburst.
Bella April 23, 2012 at 06:38 PM
Adam. He was not the driver of the car that crashed, nor did he cause the crash. Put yourself in his shoes. He can be charged with engaging in a street race and excessive speed, and whatever other charges that fit. Vehicular manslaughter just doesn't seem fitting for the driver of the other car,in my opinion.
Bella April 23, 2012 at 06:39 PM
I agree wholeheartedly, baseball Mom. R.I.P Big Sweat & Jayli

"(The driver of the Volkswagen -- who was later found to be sober --)" *The driver that crashed was NOT under the influence. http://santee.patch.com/articles/15-year-old-santana-student-injured-in-crash-awakens-from-coma

"(The driver of the Volkswagen -- who was later found to be sober --)" *The driver that crashed was NOT under the influence. *Racing is dangerous. --> The driver maintains his gas peddle stuck.
jessica russell April 27, 2012 at 07:23 PM
he really did nothing wrong. he wasn't even racing.
Bella April 29, 2012 at 07:51 AM
i think sooo many have learned from this; myself included.
adam paul June 29, 2012 at 10:19 PM
Gina, I don't need to put myself in his shoes. Its about darn time there was some responsibility taken. If he was racing than yes he did cause the crash. The actions caused injury/death. Its not a hard spot, everything I have read comment wise say be lenient on the kid but someone has to take responsibility. Taking away his license isn't going to solve anything and is a very weak punishment. I work at the school and am on the football staff and yes it is a tragedy but people need to hold others accountable.
