Deputies Investigate Reports of Rock Throwing by Kids Near West Hills High

Dispatchers say helicopters scanned the scene for signs of the young people, but no one was contacted following the reports.

Helicopters have patrolled near West Hills High School the last two nights in response to calls about young people throwing rocks, authorities said.

The kids were just “causing disturbances” Wednesday and Thursday near the Mast Boulevard campus, a San Diego sheriffs dispatcher said, and not throwing rocks at cars or anyone else.

Deputies were not able to touch base with any subjects following the calls.

Sheriffs Lt. Jason Vickery noted that helicopter units are not just called out to investigate major crimes, but also may back up deputies on the ground looking into neighborhood calls or even traffic stops if they are nearby.

“It's not always a critical incident they're involved in,” he said. “They're on patrol just like the deputies in patrol cars.”
