Santee DUI Checkpoint Yields Five Arrests

Saturday night's DUI checkpoint on Mission Gorge Road ended up with five arrests, eight citations and 11 impounded cars.

A  in Santee Saturday night made five arrests and eight citations, according to the Sheriff's Department.

The checkpoint took place in the 8800 block of Mission Gorge Road from 8:30 p.m. Saturday evening to 3 a.m. Sunday morning.

The Sheriff's Department reports a total of 788 vehicles passed through the checkpoint. In addition to the five arrests and eight citations, there were 11 vehicle impounds.

The DUI checkpoint was funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, sheriff's officials said. It is part of the national campaign, "Drunk Driving: Over the Limit, Under Arrest,'' which is funded by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the nation's total traffic fatalities are at their lowest levels in six decades, since records were kept. NHTSA's reports show DUI deaths over two years in California declined by 16 percent, from 1,132 in 2007 to 950 in 2009.
